Second Grade CHESPAX Program Description
The focus of this program is on protecting the environment through recycling, reducing and reusing the different products that we all use every day. Students learn that the different items that we consume originate from materials that are either grown or mined from the earth and that these natural resources need to be conserved. Students visit the Appeal Landfill to learn about the items that can be recycled in Calvert County and to collect data about the recycling behaviors of Calvert County residents.
Students then travel to Annmarie Sculpture Garden and Art Center to learn about reducing the amount of trash sent to the landfill through the re-use of “trash” as a part of an art project. Students also learn the art of composting as a strategy for reducing the waste from their lunch.
Students use what they learn on the field trip to design a reusable grocery bag with a message about conserving natural resources and recycling. The bags are given out FREE on Earth Day at locally owned and operated grocery stores throughout the county.
